چکیده

Studies in this laboratory for the past several years have been focused on the epidemiology of hemolytic streptococcal disease in New Haven. Attention is being given to the incidence and possible clinical and epidemiological significance of the various serological types of hemolytic streptococci recovered from residents of this city. Current experience indicates that in a city of some 160,000 individuals, such as New Haven, only a few of Griffith's serological types are important as a cause of disease during a given year or perhaps over a period of several years. It is for this reason that we have recently completed the typing of strains of hemolytic streptococci which were recovered from more than a hundred children from August 1, 1939, to August 1, 1940. Data for the succeeding three years are being compiled and the purpose of this paper is to record the types of hemolytic streptococci found in this city during the streptococcal season of 1939-1940.

Hemolytic Streptococci Recovered During an Epidemic in a Kindergarten *

The methods of Lancefield and of Griffith for grouping and typing hemolytic streptococci have greatly facilitated studies on the relationship of the hemolytic streptococcus to human disease. Strains from human disease fall into Lancefield's Group A by the precipitin test.5 Exceptions occur, but they are rare.' Group A consists of about 30 types which can be identified by another precipitin test...

STUDIES ON BACTERIOPHAGES OF HEMOLYTIC STREPTOCOCCI I. FACTORS INFLUENCING THE INterACTION OF PHAGE AND SUSCEPTmLE

The bacteriophages of ~-hemolytic streptococci studied by Evans (1-4) were classified into several races or types. I t is clear from this early work that the phages demonstrated some degree of specificity for streptococcal groups. For instance, a bacteriophage which lysed almost all group C streptococci did not lyse group A streptococci. However, much of this work was done prior to the serologi...

RAPID IDENTIFICATION OF GROUP A STREPTOCOCCI BY PYRROLIDONYL-β-APHTHYLAMIDE HYDROLYSIS

In a clinical trial a new pyrrolidonyl-β-naphthylamide (PYR) hydrolysis test was compared with the bacitracin disk susceptibility test for accuracy in the presumptive identification of group A streptococci (GAS). Among 128 isolates of beta-hemolytic streptococci 93 group A isolates were found. The sensitivity of the PYR and bacitracin tests were similar (98.9%), but the bacitracin test had ...

The Lancefield Groups of Hemolytic Streptococci Found in Children *

In a recent paper Boisvert,' reports that of 509 strains of Streptococcus hemolyticus isolated from 262 cases of streptococcal disease and grouped by means of the precipitin test, all fell into Lancefield's Group A; all of these cases were infants and children. Our own work has been along similar lines and was planned as a further test of the striking relationship between Group A streptococci a...
